With all the talk about how critical it is to be part of the Web 2.0 conversation it is easy to forget the significant risks involved with participation.

Research conducted by market research firm Crosstab for Microsoft reflects on the startling potential implications of releasing fragments of identity into the wilds of the Internet.

Some examples include how 78% of German employers would reject a job candidate because of "inapprorpiate comments and text" published online. In the US 55% of employers would turn down an application if they cam across "unsuitable photos or videos" online. In the UK 35% of HR departments would consider rejecting a candidate for "inappropriate comments or text written by friends and relatives".

Smoothmedia navigates these treacherous waters by advising clients of any size, from individuals to multinationals, on the benefits and risks of participation. Strategy is all about gauging the water and wind before you set sail.
